In October 2012, our Centennial Celebration commemorated Rice University’s first one hundred years of achievement with an array of lectures and discussions from thought leaders, world-premiere musical and arts performances, and festivities of all kinds. The Centennial Celebration was among the most vibrant events ever held at Rice University, as thousands of Rice alumni, friends and supporters from Houston and across the globe gathered to celebrate the strength of our community, to applaud the achievements that marked our first century, and to set the stage for our second.
Just as Rice’s first president, Edgar Odell Lovett, did a century ago when he inaugurated the new institute, we invited renowned scholars and artists who would challenge us to ever greater achievement and inspire us on our quest to solve the problems that challenge humanity. This time around, however, we did not host these visionary scientists and artists as a fledgling institute occupying one building at the edge of a young city, but as a thriving research university in the heart of a major center of commerce and creativity. We celebrated our centennial as the university that President Lovett hoped for, even as we strive to be so much more.
In that spirit, I invite you to explore the Centennial Celebration web site, to watch the lectures and performances that captivated our campus for a sunny week in October, and to explore Rice's past, present, and future. As we enter the final year of the Centennial Campaign, I also invite you to volunteer at Rice, to share your own Rice story, to make a gift toward the Centennial Campaign and, most importantly, to get involved.
From its founding, Rice University has been an institution devoted to influencing the world. A success at Rice is a success for our community. Our future successes will be your successes. Our Centennial Celebration was your Centennial Celebration, and I thank you for helping us to send out our first century, and to bring in our second, in such grand style.
David W. Leebron
